Volunteer & Community Partner Awards

Volunteer Award Winners Vickie Taylor, Al Purcell and Janet Wright

The City of Lakeway has numerous volunteers assisting with a variety of events, programs and other needs. At a special volunteer reception this week, the City of Lakeway awarded three volunteer awards to some special community members and a community partner award to an organization that works closely with Lakeway. Here are those special honors:

COMMUNITY PARTNER AWARD

This award went to Lake Travis Fire Rescue for their dedication in keeping our community safe. This year, this team of emergency responders worked closely with the City of Lakeway to ensure emergency operations were running smoothly during the devastating ice storm in February, and the community was safe during the record heat and drought this past summer. In Lakeway alone this year, this team responded to more than 2,000 calls for service. We appreciate our strong partnership with Lake Travis Fire Rescue.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD

This special award went to Vickie Taylor, who serves as chair for the Lakeway Heritage Committee. Vickie and her husband Dave have volunteered in numerous capacities for the City of Lakeway over the years. Vickie spends countless volunteer hours overseeing a committee that helps ensure Lakeway's history is well-documented, preserved and the community is educated on Lakeway's beginnings. She previously received the award for Unsung Hero in 2015.

She has served in the role for many years, helping bring musical events, special arts programs and fantastic art installations to the community. She also donates her time to ensuring our art installations are well-maintained. She previously received the award for Volunteer of the Year in 2019.

Officer Purcell is also Dr. Purcell, serving as a full-time professor and chair for the History Department at Austin Community College. He began his teaching career there in 1976. When he is not teaching, you can find him volunteering at numerous events in Lakeway as a reserve officer.
