Beware Oak Wilt-Infected Firewood

Know Before You Burn

Fungus infected woodFirewood from an unknown source could have been harvested in an oak wilt center. Unseasoned wood cut from infected red oaks can hide fungal mats. The only sign of a mat may be a narrow crack in the bark several inches long.

Dry firewood is safe because any fungal mats would have dried up. Always buy firewood with loose bark and cracked ends if possible.
